Based on a true story
Flavia Insinna returns with a leading role to share the story of what would later be recognised as the first Paralympic games which took place in Rome in 1960.
A MUSO DURO by Marco Pontecorvo tells the story of Antonio Maglio, an enlightened physician who, taking a cue from Prof. Ludwig Guttmann’s studies and methodologies on the rehabilitation of paraplegics, in the late 1950s and early 1960s, gave hope and dignity to disabled people who, until then, lay in a hospital bed, hidden from others, from outside society.
Antonio Maglio’s name is unknown to most Italians. Yet thanks to him, his dedication and his stubbornness, the first Paralympic Games in historywas born, in which 400 athletes from 23 nations participated. For the first time the “paralytics” showed themselves to the world without shame, without embarrassment but with the knowledge that they could live a life like everyone else.
